I spent money.

I'm cheap.

Not thrifty. Nor am I a careful consumer. I make Ebenezer Scrooge look charitable.

OK, I'm not that bad. I do feed my children and keep the house over 60 degrees. I also give a regular percentage of my paycheck (before taxes) to the church and additional amounts to missions.

But I don't like spending money. Not on myself anyway.

I have a great disdain for debt and my chief concern in paying down the debt I do have. We've been pretty good so we don't have any credit card bills that hang around very long and we never (except by accident) carry anything over. I don't like paying interest either.

I'm also a fairly simple man and am easily amused. I'm the kind of guy who plays with cardboard boxes and paper towel rolls. Very inexpensive toys. One of my biggest thrills is to get new socks (I also don't like threadbare socks. ICK!).

So given all that it was a wonder to both my wife and myself that I purchased an MP3 player. I admit it! I now have a little portable device with headphones and all! That link shows a price of $150. I got mine on sale.

A birthday check from the Bank of MOM helped make my decision. You are never too old to get birthday checks from Mom.

The funny thing is that I don't listen to much music these days. We have some Patch-The-Pirate tapes and CDs and some others from Majesty Music, The Marshalls, and a small, select group of other artists. No. If you were to peruse our music collection, you would find it dreadfully lacking.

So why buy this thing? A friend of mine suggested I look into audio books. It turns out we can download many through the public library system. So, take one MP3 player, one FM transmitter, and suddenly I can listen to an array of novels as I spend three hours (round trip) each day in the car. I've gotten tired of the morning and afternoon talk shows and the local stations never seem to have accurate traffic reports anyway so I now have a wonderful way to spend my "free" time.

4 GB is enough for 10 to 20 large volumes and is probably overkill for my use, since I can only listen to one book at a time. But it's a neat little device and the FM transmitter works well, producing a signal strong enough to overpower weaker signals. An "empty" frequency is always best but even one that is mostly static will work just fine. There's a little static in the background and now and again something may interfere (such as the guy driving next to you that also has a transmitter...) but overall the quality is very good.

I can only imagine what that other fellow thinks when his radio suddenly starts describing the various types of whales and the quantities of oil they produce.

Aye, Aye! The White Whale. Turn to! Turn to.

That's right. I'm driving down the highway listening to Moby Dick.

HA-HA-HA!

Ha! Good for you. We recently got one of those car-transmitters for our MP3 players.

I'm much like you when it comes to fear/disdain of debt, and over-all cheapness. (My) Melissa is very much the opposite, so naturally that's been a major bone of contention in our relationship. Aside from driving each other crazy, it has taught me to loosen up a bit, and her to be more frugal.

I'm sorry I haven't gotten back to you about your story yet. I've been caught up in school, work and depression-related issues... I haven't felt stable and objective enough to give your story the attention it deserves.
