Banjos, Bones, and Ballads

Jeff Warner had a small concert in our Town Hall Friday night. He plays all the good folk songs from the 1840's on up and presents a good history of the oral traditions and Minstrel Shows.

Jeff's parents went on a crusade in the middle of the 20th century to record all these old songs as sung by real people. After recording something like one thousand songs they turned them all over to the Library of Congress as part of our American Heritage.

I like to think I know something about these old songs but I soon learned I know almost nothing! The only song I really knew was "Old Dan Tucker" - every other song was new to me. "Farmer's Toast" I think I may have heard once, but Dan McArthur's "Yucky Bugs" although not very old was still entertaining:

Now slugs is bugs that nobody loves but everybody understands
Cause they look disgusting, and they taste disgusting
And they feel disgusting in your hands

But of all the little bugs that grow in the garden
Slugs have a special place in my heart
Cause they never quit drinking once they start

So come on down, lets go out and have a slug drowning party tonight
No they can’t tell if they’re floating in Guiness or sinking in Miller Light
They ain’t particular and they got no taste
And they’ll drown in any beer in sight

So come on down, let’s go out, and have a slug drowning party tonight!

I wish I had brought some cash. I couldn't buy any CD's!!!
