Compromise
So I've been reading up on Barack Obama and how he continually uses Christian references and talks about his faith in speeches. I can't help but think he is sincere in his claims of being a Christian.
Who in their right mind would pretend to be a Christian? It's one thing to give lip service now and then but Mr. Obama is saying so quite a bit. His claims of church service and attendance can be verified back to the mid 1980s. This isn't something he started just on the campaign trail.
I don't agree with his position on many subjects and I dislike his call for conservatives to compromise on key subjects such as abortion. Why should conservatives be the ones to compromise? What sort of liberal compromises is he suggesting? "Compromise" is a code word for "stop being pigheaded and do as I tell you."
But I'm willing to play along. I've thought of what seems to me a good compromise. In the spirit of Jesus' answer to the Pharisees regarding divorce (Matt 19:8), we know that because of the "hardness" of their hearts people will continue to seek abortions. Instead of outlawing abortions completely, let's put some specific restrictions on the procedure.
Using the phrase "Safe, Legal, and Rare" let's do just that.
First, to keep the procedure safe, let's close all the "abortion clinics" and make sure the procedure is done in a hospital with complete supervision by medical personnel and a trained surgeon. We're talking about the health of the mother, after all.
Second, I'm willing to let Roe v. Wade stand and encourage Pro-Life groups to cut back on litigation. I'll compromise on this part, but only for what follows.
Third, to keep the procedure "rare" we must ensure that unwanted pregnancies are reduced or eliminated. I know, no one wants to talk about abstinence, but do you know of another one-hundred percent effective way to keep from getting pregnant? It works everywhere it's tried.
And we must increase the availability and ease of adoption. Encourage mothers deliver their babies and allow them to be adopted. The sonogram pictures and other education about the developing child teaches the truth that the "blob of cells" is in fact a human being.
So Mr Obama. I'm willing to compromise. Are you?
