The Real Effects of the Y2K Bug

Remember Y2K? It seems so very long ago that we were all worried about the power going out, planes crashing, and grocery stores running out of food. Some predicted gloom and doom while others thought nothing would happen.

I'll be honest and say I used Y2K as an opportunity to put together a disaster recovery plan. When you live in a rural area and have to possibility of floods or severe snow storms it really is a good idea to be prepared for an extended time without electricity. I did not, however, buy a generator, hand guns, or other really whacked out items. And I was just as happy to find the power was still on after midnight.

Really, I learned my lesson of being prepared not in 2000 but in 1998 when a large portion of New England and Canada lost power due to ice storms. While my house survived and never lost power, where I worked was out for the better part of a week. Let me tell you, servicing and installing computer equipment isn't very easy without electricity.

Since then I've gotten into the habit of stocking up on certain items and making sure all the camping gear is in good order. There have been a few days when we cooked on the camp stove - I still don't own a generator - but the power has never been off for over a day.

But I realized my collecting extras had turned from a good idea into a habitual problem. Upon returning from the dentist the other day I discovered a true horror. I possess over twenty tooth brushes.

Every time I go the dentist hands me a new tooth brush and a little tube of tooth paste. I'm not sure to where all that tooth paste has disappeared but the brushes have collected in one drawer.  Melissa has just reminded me that there are even more in the downstairs closet, so that means... I have no idea what that means except that I own even more tooth brushes that I first counted. And why are they in the closet?

Well!  I guess I'm as prepared for the Great Tooth Brush Disaster as I can ever be. Not to worry, though. I'm not the greedy type and I'll certainly share my wealth with others during their time of need. I'm sure we'll all survive

But all that missing tooth paste really has me worried.
